Pre-hike report submitted by walkabout leader on 03/03.17:
This morning we did a pre-hike of Morgan Park to check out trail conditions and what birds are being seen there. The high point of the walk was seeing the Swallow tail Kites are back. So are the Parulas. We also saw Titmice, Cranes, Wood storks, a Bald eagle, and Red shouldered hawks as well as other birds.
For the people coming from Punta Gorda on 17, we did not have to detour around Nocatee and after turning LEFT off 17 onto 70, it is less than a mile to the brown sign for the park. They can look for the sign after passing the Elks Lodge. I hope the weather is as pleasant next Tuesday.
On Tuesday, March 7, 2017, PRAS will be offering a walkabout at Morgan Park in Arcadia at 8 AM. We will meet at the park.
There are 3 main trails in the park. All are wide and well maintained. One of them is paved and another follows the bank of the Peace River. A variety of birds are seen there including warblers, owls, and raptors. On one trip almost a dozen Swallow-tailed Kites were observed soaring overhead.
We will meet at the park at 8 AM.
Bring sun protection, insect repellent, walking shoes, and binoculars.
The park’s address is 1100 West Hickory St , Arcadia, FL. 34266. The driving distance will be about the same as for walkabouts in the Englewood area such as Wildflower or Amberjack Preserve. To get to Morgan Park from Port Charlotte take King’s Hwy to Hwy 72. Turn RIGHT on 72. When Hwy 72 , meets Hwy 70, turn RIGHT on 70. On 70, you will cross two bridges and some railroad tracks. After crossing the railroad tracks you will make a LEFT turn onto North Parker Ave. Then turn LEFT on West Hickory. Cross the railroad tracks and turn RIGHT into the park.
For people taking Hwy 17, from Punta Gorda**, there is construction in the Nocatee area making delays and detours that vary as construction progresses.
If taking Hwy 17, start looking for the park sign and North Parker Ave about a mile from Hwy 17. Turn RIGHT on North Parker, then turn LEFT on West Hickory.
**For those traveling from Punta Gorda, Google or other map services sometimes give directions to go around Nocatee and come in on Airport Rd to 70.
