FIELD TRIP – Myakka River State Park
January 21, 2017 @ 7:00 am - 2:00 pm
Please join Peace River Audubon for a field trip to Myakka River State Park on Saturday January 21. Located in Sarasota County off SR 72, the park is classic old Florida with a variety of habitats – woods, marsh, river, Myakka Lake. Birds – and alligators – are plentiful, and we usually see a terrific assortment of wading, shore birds and raptors, often close enough for great photographs. Ducks, formerly plentiful but scarce in recent years, are beginning to make a comeback. Wild turkey are often spotted in the woods early in the morning. After exploring several hotspots, we will conclude with lunch in the park near the concession area. Some groups may opt to stay for an airboat or tram ride, or canoeing, or for exploring other areas of the park.
We will meet at 7 AM for carpooling at our new North meeting place, the Kings Highway Walmart parking lot, in the area close to Culvers, just north of I-75 Exit 170. If you would like meet us in the park, we should arrive at the Visitor’s Center, left turn after the entrance, at 8 AM. If you plan to do that, please let us know so we can look for you. Bring plenty of water, lunch and snacks– or buy in the concession area. Sunscreen and sunhats and other weather-appropriate gear are important. Insect repellant is usually not needed, but there’s no guarantee on that! There is a $6.00 fee per car for the park, but you may have access to a free pass found in the CHNEP calendars.
